Lightning Jay is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership at Binghamton University's College of Community and Public Affairs. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education following experience as a middle and high school teacher in Brooklyn and Minneapolis.
His research focuses on supporting authentic historical discourse, developing social studies teachers, and understanding how teachers develop adaptive expertise. He examines pedagogical approaches in teacher education and strategies for student-centered learning. Recent projects explore racial pedagogical knowledge in online history classrooms and document-based instruction coaching.
