Liang Luo

Liang Luo is a Professor of Chinese Studies and Chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at George Mason University. She holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University and an M.A. and B.A. in Comparative Literature and World Literature from Beijing Normal University. Her academic leadership includes serving on the Program Committee for the Association for Asian Studies annual conference and as President of the Association of Chinese and Comparative Literature.

Her research focuses on the intersection of Chinese performance studies, folklore, and transnational cultural movements. Current projects include Profound Propaganda: The International Avant-Garde and the Transformations of Modern China and Polyphonic Storytelling: Animating Heritage for Contemporary Life in the Age of Global Asias. She is also co-editing A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in East Asia (Brill) and special issues on Global Asias and U.S. 250th anniversary fairy tales.

Scientific awards include the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award (University of Kentucky), CELT Innovation + Design Lab Fellowship (University of Kentucky), and a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar Stipend. She has also held research fellowships at Fudan University, Ewha Institute for the Humanities, and Australian National University’s Humanities Research Center.

Liang Luo serves as a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Folklore, East China Normal University, and is active in international academic leadership roles. Her work bridges Sinophone cultural studies, digital humanities, and comparative literature.
