About
Dr. Li Shen is a Lecturer in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Jesus College and Pembroke College. He holds a DPhil in Engineering Science from Jesus College and has extensive teaching experience across multiple institutions. His research focuses on thermal propulsion systems, turbulent flows, and renewable energy, particularly in optimizing multi-phase flows of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel.
Dr. Shen's academic background includes a Bachelor's and Master's in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan–Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI), followed by doctoral research at Oxford on thermal propulsion systems. He has served as a College Lecturer at Pembroke College and returned to Jesus College during the 2024-2025 academic year.
His teaching roles span undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Engineering Science, including Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, and Heat Transfer. He has mentored over 500 students and led teaching assistant training programs at UM-SJTU JI. In 2024, he received the Teaching Excellence Award for his tutorial work at Jesus College.
His research group collaborates with Prof. Felix Leach to advance ammonia-based energy solutions, aiming to reduce greenhouse emissions. He has published widely on ceramic materials, thermal conductivity optimization, and composite design, with a focus on energy-efficient technologies.
