Lewis Cornwell is a Lecturer in Musicology and Deputy Chair of the Musicology Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. He specializes in 20th century Japanese composers, particularly Toru Takemitsu, and explores intercultural dialogues in contemporary music. His works blend traditional Japanese instruments with modern composition techniques.
Educated at the University of Sydney, Cornwell has held roles including Chair of Musicology (2002–2010) and Associate Dean (ICT/eLearning, 2004–2006). He is a founding member of the composers' collective Music Performed and co-organized the 1998 Toru Takemitsu Symposium. As an oboist, he performs with local orchestras and chamber ensembles.
Research focuses on minimalism in Asian composers, intercultural piano composition, and Béla Bartók's influence. Current PhD students include Jingxuan WANG and Yun ZHOU. His 2002 publication in Journal of New Music Research analyzes Takemitsu's November Steps.
