About
Prof. Leonie Cornips is a Professor of 'Languageculture in Limburg' at the University of Maastricht and Senior Researcher in Sociolinguistics/Syntax at the Meertens Instituut (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences). Her work focuses on sociolinguistic variation, syntactic structures in Dutch dialects, bilingual child acquisition, and the intersection of language with local identity formation.
Her research includes groundbreaking projects such as the Syntactic Atlas of Dutch Dialects methodology, supervision of the TCULT and COAVA projects, and current investigations into dialect levelling in multicultural communities. She leads interdisciplinary collaborations with scholars like Dr. Vincent de Rooij and Dr. Irene Stengs, exploring how globalization impacts regional linguistic identities.
Her FRIAS project 'Moving Dialects' examines how peripheral communities reimagine local linguistic identities amid migration and globalization, challenging traditional notions of dialect as purely static and place-bound.
