Lena Ferriday

Lena Ferriday is a Lecturer in the History of Science and the Environment (1800-2000) at the Department of History, King's College London. She joined in January 2025 after completing a PhD at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

Her research focuses on environmental history at the intersection of bodily experiences, sensory studies, and science & technology studies in 19th-20th century Britain. Current projects explore urban environments in East London through historical sensory encounters.

Recent publications (2020-2024) examine subterranean environments in Cornwall, urban mobility networks in Bristol, and the history of speleological societies, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches combining environmental history, sensory studies, and spatial analysis.

Lena teaches undergraduate and MA courses covering British, European, and global histories with specializations in environmental history, animal history, urban history, and sensory history.
