Len Berkman is Anne Hesseltine Hoyt Professor of Theatre at Smith College, teaching playwriting, theater history, and dramatic literature since 1969. Notable students include Wendy Wasserstein, Liev Schreiber, and Patricia Wettig. His scholarly work appears in Modern Drama, Massachusetts Review, and Blackwell's Companion to Contemporary Theatre.
Education includes a PhD and MFA from Yale University.
Research focuses on:
- Contemporary play development methodologies
- Historical analysis of experimental theater movements
- Dramaturgical practices in new play incubation
Publications examine Off-Off-Broadway history and Shakespeare adaptations. Awards include Distinguished Teacher and Sherrerd Prize honors.
