About
Lee Kalcsits is an Associate Professor and Endowed Chair of Tree Fruit Environmental Physiology and Management at Washington State University's Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center (TFREC) in Wenatchee, WA. He leads a research team focusing on environmental physiology of apples, pears, and cherries, addressing abiotic stress, plant nutrition, and the preharvest/postharvest physiology interface. His work integrates agroecological, whole-plant, and molecular approaches to improve fruit tree productivity and resilience to environmental challenges.
Education: Ph.D. in Tree Physiology (University of British Columbia), M.Sc. in Tree Ecophysiology (University of Saskatchewan), B.Sc. in Horticulture (University of Saskatchewan). Before joining WSU in 2014, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Victoria and conducted research on poplar tree physiology.
Research Interests: His program emphasizes optimizing nutrient management, mitigating abiotic stress (e.g., drought, heat), and understanding rootstock-scion interactions. Key projects include developing tools for real-time nutrient status monitoring, evaluating protective netting and irrigation strategies, and advancing climate resilience for tree fruit crops.
Professional Contributions: Kalcsits supervises graduate students and postdocs, collaborates internationally, and leads initiatives funded by USDA, Washington State agencies, and industry partners. His lab has pioneered studies on calcium deficiency disorders, sunburn mitigation, and climate risk modeling for tree fruit production.
Lab Members: Current and former students/postdocs include Nadia Valverdi (Ph.D.), Raquel Gomez (M.S.), Alexander Haase (M.S.), and Victor Blanco (Postdoc). Technical staff like Schaefer Buchanan and Mary Smith support field and lab operations.
