Lee Hooper is a Professor in Research Synthesis, Nutrition & Hydration at the Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. Her research focuses on hydration and nutrition in older adults, systematic reviews in diet and cardiovascular disease, and improving care in long-term care settings. She has a PhD in Systematic Reviews from the University of Manchester and has held roles including Head of Year 1 for the MBBS degree and leader of Year 2 Medical Research teaching.
Education: BSc Biochemistry (University of East Anglia, 1981), PhD (University of Manchester, 2005), multiple diplomas in dietetics and systematic reviews. She worked in NHS dietetics before transitioning to academia in 2000.
Research interests include dehydration diagnosis in older adults, dietary fat impacts on health, and evidence synthesis methods. She has published over 198 articles, with an h-index of 51 and over 10,000 citations. Key contributions include WHO guidelines on sodium intake and ESPEN hydration guidelines for dementia.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including MBBS medical research modules and systematic review methodologies. She supervises 7 undergraduate students and leads projects on hydration in care homes and malnutrition tools.
Awards include the Ibex Award (2005) and recognition in UEA Engagement Awards. She collaborates globally, including projects in Brazil on care-dependent elderly hygiene and WHO initiatives on dietary guidelines.
