Layla D. Brown

Layla D. Brown is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology & Africana Studies at Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), with affiliate faculty status in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her research focuses on Pan-African, Socialist, and Feminist social movements in Venezuela, the U.S., and the African Diaspora. She earned her PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Duke University (2016).

Recent academic highlights include a 2020-2021 Research & Writing Fellowship at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study and a 2021-2022 Senior Research Fellowship at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg. Her work examines anti-blackness in Venezuela, constitutional recognition struggles for Afro-descended communities, and transnational solidarity movements.

Publications include articles in *European South* and *Taboo: Journal of Culture & Education*, alongside critical blog posts for *Global African Worker* and *Black Perspectives*. She co-hosted *The Last Dope Intellectual Podcast* (archived on YouTube) and actively engages with organizations like the African American Intellectual Historical Society (AAIHS) and the Association of Black Anthropologists (ABA).
