Lawrence H. Summers is the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus at Harvard University. He directs the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School. Formerly, he served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Clinton, Director of the National Economic Council under President Obama, and Chief Economist of the World Bank. Summers holds a BS from MIT (1975) and a PhD from Harvard (1982).
His research focuses on economics, global health policy, and the impact of technology on labor markets. Notable awards include the Alan T. Waterman Award (1987) and the John Bates Clark Medal (1993). Recent work includes projects on halving premature deaths by 2050 and analyzing consumer sentiment amid rising borrowing costs.
Current initiatives include a Ford Foundation-funded colloquium series on global governance and industrial policy. He is affiliated with the Kennedy School’s Belfer Center and Mossavar-Rahmani Center.
