Laurie Marhoefer is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of History at the University of Washington (College of Arts & Sciences). Their research focuses on 20th-century Germany, fascism, queer studies, and transgender studies. They hold a Ph.D. from Rutgers University (2008) and a B.A. from Columbia University (2000).

Research interests include LGBTQ+ history, Nazi Germany, and the intersections of race, gender, and colonialism. Notable works include Racism and the Making of Gay Rights (2023) and Sex and the Weimar Republic (2015). Current projects explore trans people in Nazi Germany, trans theory in historiography, and trans 1920s Berlin.
Awards include the 2023 Choice Outstanding Academic Title and a Glasscock Book Prize shortlist. They co-teach a global history of AIDS course and are affiliated with the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies, Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, and Germanics.
Advising: Not accepting graduate students as primary advisor for the 2025-6 cycle.
