Laurence R. Helfer is the Harry R. Chadwick, Sr. Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law. He specializes in international law, human rights (including LGBT rights), and intellectual property law. He currently serves as a member of the UN Human Rights Committee (2023–2026), elected by the U.S. to monitor compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Helfer holds a JD from NYU, an MPA from Princeton, and a BA from Yale. He co-directs Duke’s Center for International and Comparative Law and has been a visiting professor at the University of Copenhagen’s iCourts. His research focuses on treaty implementation, human rights enforcement, and the intersection of intellectual property with human rights, including landmark works on the Marrakesh Treaty and derogations from human rights treaties.
