Lauren Jae Gutterman

Lauren Jae Gutterman serves as Chair and Associate Professor of American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts. She holds concurrent faculty appointments in the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies and maintains affiliations with both the LGBTQ Studies program and History Department.

Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from New York University.

Professor Gutterman specializes in 20th-century U.S. history with focus on lesbian experiences within marriage, LGBTQ family formations, and intersections of gender/sexuality with popular culture. Her methodological approaches integrate oral history, public history, and digital humanities frameworks to examine how personal narratives shape historical understanding.

Her award-winning monograph Her Neighbor's Wife: A History of Lesbian Desire Within Marriage (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020) established foundational scholarship on married women's same-sex relationships since 1945, receiving critical acclaim across multiple historical subfields.

Her major scholarly recognitions include:
