About
Lauren Atkinson is a researcher at the University of Kansas in the Department of Molecular Biosciences, mentored by P. Scott Hefty.
Research Focus: Her work investigates the metabolic pathways of Chlamydia, a bacterium responsible for sexually transmitted infections and infectious blindness. Despite lacking the first step of glycolysis, Chlamydia relies on the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) and host-cell manipulation for survival. This research aims to identify novel antibiotic targets by characterizing the PPP's role in Chlamydia biology.
