Laurel Swinden is an Adjunct Professor of Flute, holding positions at Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Waterloo, and University of Guelph. She serves as Principal Flute of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra and Associate Principal Flute/Piccolo of the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra. Her research focuses on flute pedagogy, historical performance practices, and expanding flute repertoire through under-represented composers. With a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the University of Toronto, she bridges academic and professional music spheres through teaching, performance, and advocacy for diverse musical voices.
Her performance interests include Scottish traditional music and 18th-century techniques, alongside modern and contemporary works. She actively promotes women composers and Canadian musical heritage through her performances and teaching. Swinden maintains an active presence in music education via the Laurier Conservatory Beckett School and is a sought-after performer across North America, China, and South America.
