Laura Mann is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her research focuses on the political economy of development, knowledge, and technology, with a regional emphasis on East Africa (Sudan, Kenya, Rwanda) and broader engagements in Asia and North America. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and has prior affiliations with the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) and the African Studies Centre in Leiden.
Her key research interests include digitisation, global trade, intellectual histories of development, higher education's role in knowledge production, and the intersections of Islam, Islamic finance, and economic development. She also supervises MSc students on topics such as Sudanese politics, economic transformation in Africa and the Middle East, and digitalization's impact on global agriculture.
Mann is a research affiliate of the Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa and serves on the Editorial Working Group of the Review of African Political Economy. Her work interrogates questions of equity in global knowledge and technology benefit distribution.
