Laura M Makey is a Senior Lecturer at the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences, affiliated with the Health Research Institute. Her roles include teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in healthcare, supervising master’s students, and conducting research on loneliness in women, particularly those living with HIV. She holds a BSc (Hons), MSc in Clinical Research, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Education. As a PhD candidate, her research explores women’s experiences of loneliness and co-design approaches in healthcare.
Teaching focuses on communication, ethics, and research methodologies. She co-leads an intergenerational living project and promotes inclusive research practices through co-production with marginalized populations. She serves on the Health Research Authority’s ethics committee and reviews for Nursing Times and Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice.
Her advisory work includes projects on perinatal mental health, virtual wards, and diabetes in minority ethnic groups. She designs and manages research teams, blending clinical and academic expertise to improve healthcare practices and policies.
