Laura Levin is an Associate Professor of Theatre & Performance Studies at York University's School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD). She holds a BA from McGill University and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her work bridges academia and practice, focusing on site-specific performance, gender studies, and performance's role in activism and environmental justice. She is a leading editor in Canadian performance studies, serving as former Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Theatre Review and Co-Editor of Performance Studies in Canada.
Her research emphasizes experimental methodologies, including research-creation, and has led to projects like Hemispheric Encounters, an SSHRC-funded initiative examining transborder performance practices. She also collaborates with artists on immersive installations (e.g., MetroARCADE at the Bata Shoe Museum) and activist interventions with collectives like the Queen’s Beavers.
Key awards include the CATR Ann Saddlemyer Award (2015) for her book Performing Ground and the Patrick O’Neill Award (2018) for co-editing Performance Studies in Canada. Her current projects include a new book on Canadian political performance and dramaturgical work for Jess Dobkin’s Wetrospective.
