About
Prof. Laura Govers is an Associate Professor in Marine Ecology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering, affiliated with the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences. She holds a Senior Researcher position at the Royal NIOZ. Her research focuses on coastal ecosystem functioning, seagrass ecology, and conservation strategies in environments like the Wadden Sea and tropical regions. She has led and collaborated on projects such as the Waddensleutels food web study and the restoration of Wadden Island Griend.
Education: Completed a B.Sc. in Biology (Radboud University Nijmegen), M.Sc. Marine Ecology (cum laude), and a Ph.D. on seagrass biogeochemistry. Postdoctoral work included studies on seagrass pathogens and Wadden Sea ecology.
Research Interests: Seagrass restoration, biogeochemical stressors, mutualistic interactions in ecosystems, and the impact of climate change on coastal habitats. Her work emphasizes field experiments in diverse locations like Mauritania, Australia, and the Caribbean.
Notable Achievements: Awarded for student presentations (2012) and posters (2011). Secured grants totaling over €18,000 for international fieldwork. Active in public engagement through media articles and policy advocacy for natural restoration laws.
Current Projects: Leading initiatives like the Seagrass Consortium for European restoration and investigating avian nutrient cycling in the Wadden Sea. Collaborates on habitat complexity studies using artificial substrates and biodegradable structures.
