Laura Garrison

Laura Garrison is an Associate Professor (tenure-track) in the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen, Norway. She leads the Garrison Team and is affiliated with the Mohn Medical Imaging & Visualization Centre. Her research focuses on human factors in visualization, particularly in health and life sciences, emphasizing storytelling strategies and accessibility in scientific communication.

Education: PhD in Visualization from the University of Bergen (2022), MSc in Biomedical Visualization from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and BA in Anatomy/Physiology from Northern Michigan University.

Research Interests: Visualization narrative, critical visualization, human-data interaction, biomedical visualization, and medical illustration. Notable projects include tools like SpectraMosaic for MR spectroscopy analysis and narrative-driven visualizations for disease communication.

Awards: Dirk Bartz Prize (2023), Karl-Heinz Höhne Award (2021), Momentum Career Development Grant (2024), and recognition for best posters/papers in IEEE VIS and Eurographics conferences.

Lab Activities: Active in developing narrative medical visualization tools and exploring AI integration for character design in data-driven stories. Collaborates with institutions like MMIV Centre and the Norwegian Mother-Father-Child Cohort Study (MoBa).
