Laura Edling is a Lecturer in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont (UVM). Her work focuses on community-driven management of natural resources and renewable energy systems, emphasizing collaborative approaches with local experts. She holds a Ph.D. in Natural Resources from UVM (2020), an M.A. in Environmental Studies from Brown University (2009), and a B.A. in Religion and Political Studies (summa cum laude) from UVM (2004).
Her research spans community fisheries management in Fiji, Rhode Island, and Kerala; estuarine management in Oregon; and forestry initiatives in northern New England. She investigates how climate change impacts community-based resource governance and energy systems, employing mixed methods including qualitative interviews, surveys, GIS analysis, and remote sensing. Laura prioritizes co-ownership of research outcomes with community stakeholders.
Teaching focuses include global environmental assessment, ecology, renewable energy transitions, participatory action research, and cultural dimensions of natural resource management. She advises courses such as Forest, Community, and Climate: Burning Issues and Critical Reflection and Dialogue.
