Laura Dioșan

Laura Dioșan is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where she has served since March 2017. Previously, she held positions as Associate Professor (April 2013-March 2017) and Lecturer (October 2009-April 2013) in the same department. She earned her Ph.D. from INSA, Rouen, France in October 2008 and completed her undergraduate studies in Computer Science at Babeş-Bolyai University in June 2004.

Dr. Dioșan specializes in applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to solve real-world problems across multiple domains. Her research spans computer vision, medical imaging, and social good applications, with particular focus on developing intelligent systems that address practical challenges in healthcare, transportation, and social welfare. She leads the Intelligent Tools for Social Good (ITSG) initiative which guides students in creating AI solutions for societal issues.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary approach combining AI techniques with domain-specific applications. The 2024 publications show her work bridging deep learning with medical diagnostics (breast cancer identification, dental caries detection) and transportation safety (railway scene understanding).
