Dr Laura Chappell is a Senior Lecturer in European Politics at the University of Surrey. She holds a PhD and MA in European Studies from the University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), including European defence capability development, EU crisis management, and the security policies of Germany and Poland. She has authored books and co-edited the journal European Security. Her work also explores gender dimensions in European security governance.
Dr Chappell teaches undergraduate courses on International Relations theories, European security diplomacy, and dissertation supervision. Her publications emphasize strategic shifts in EU security frameworks, member state roles, and institutional dynamics. Notable contributions include analyses of Poland’s evolving foreign policy and the EU’s rapid deployment capacities.
She has participated in initiatives such as the Model NATO competition and co-led the Centre for Britain and Europe’s summer school. Her research highlights the interplay between EU institutional structures and national security priorities, with a focus on post-enlargement dynamics and gender regimes within EU security institutions.
