Empa - Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and TechnologyAbout
Lars P.H. Jeurgens is the Head of the Laboratory for Joining Technologies & Corrosion at Empa, part of the Division of Advanced Materials and Surfaces in Dübendorf, Switzerland. He leads research in surface and interface engineering of metals, oxides, and coating systems with applications in joining and corrosion. His work bridges fundamental science and industrial applications in advanced materials.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science & Technology, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands (1996–2000)
- M.Sc. in Geology, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University, Netherlands (1989–1995)
His research focuses on tailoring microstructure-property relationships in functional oxide films and developing nanostructured materials for novel micro- and nano-joining technologies. He applies advanced surface analysis techniques such as HAXPES and local electrochemistry to understand interface reactivity and corrosion processes.
Dr. Jeurgens has received several honors, including the Masing-Gedächtnispreis (2008) and the AMOCO Award (1995). He is actively involved in the global research community through leadership in international associations and editorial roles.
He mentors young researchers through the feM-LEAD program and supervises master’s theses. He has organized and chaired numerous international conferences, including the International Conference on Nanojoining and Microjoining (NMJ) series and sessions within IIW and ECASIA. His professional service includes roles in the International Institute of Welding, ECASIA, and Swissphotonics.
He is affiliated with key research networks such as the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics at ETH Zurich and serves on advisory boards for journals and conferences. His work continues to advance the science of materials interfaces and joining technologies.
