Lars Nybo

Lars Nybo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports within the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen. He also serves as Vice Head for Education and member of the team management since 2010. His research focuses on exercise physiology, central nervous system functionality during work, and environmental factors affecting human performance.

Dr. Nybo earned his Dr. Scient. degree from the University of Copenhagen in 2004, following a Cand. Scient. in Exercise and Sport Sciences in 1999. His academic journey includes progressive roles from Research and Teaching Assistant (1999-2000) to Associate Professor (since 2004), demonstrating his commitment to both research and education in exercise science.

His primary research interests center around central fatigue mechanisms and factors affecting central nervous system functionality during physical work, exercise physiology's relationship to health and performance, and temperature regulation's influence on physical capabilities. This research bridges fundamental physiological mechanisms with practical applications for athletes and workers in extreme environments.

Dr. Nybo's recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a strong focus on environmental physiology, particularly heat and altitude effects on human performance, muscle fatigue mechanisms, and sport-specific physiological adaptations. His work spans laboratory investigations and field studies with elite athletes, demonstrating both scientific rigor and practical relevance.

As an educator, Dr. Nybo has supervised 12 Master's students and co-advised 2 PhD students. He actively contributes to the academic community as a reviewer for over 10 international journals and co-organizer of 3 international conferences. His expertise is recognized through invitations to speak at more than 10 international conferences including Experimental Biology, ACSM, and IUPS Thermal Conferences.

Beyond academia, Dr. Nybo serves as a physiological advisor for Team Danmark (the Danish national sports organization), applying his research to enhance athletic performance at the highest levels.
