University of CopenhagenAbout
Lars Hviid is a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He leads research within the SURFACE team and CMP (Centre for Medical Parasitology), focusing on malaria immunology and pathogenesis. His work significantly contributes to understanding naturally acquired immunity to Plasmodium falciparum malaria, particularly among vulnerable populations.
Dr. Hviid's primary research interests include the immunology and pathogenesis of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children, placental malaria, and the immuno-evasive mechanisms employed by malaria parasites. His research program aims to enhance malaria research capacity in Africa and contribute to the development of effective malaria vaccines. His work has established important connections between antibody responses, particularly IgG and IgM interactions with PfEMP1 variants, and clinical protection against malaria.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on antibody glycosylation patterns (particularly Fc-afucosylation), VAR2CSA-specific immunity in pregnancy, and the relationship between hemoglobin variants and malaria protection. The research spans both basic immunological mechanisms and applied clinical studies in endemic areas, particularly in Ghana.
- Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (FASTMH) (2013)
- Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) (2015)
Professor Hviid has served on the editorial board of PLoS Medicine since 2006 and has been actively involved in mentoring students and researchers, particularly from malaria-endemic regions. His research program includes collaborations across multiple African countries, reflecting his commitment to building research capacity on the continent. He coordinates the BSc course 'Cellular and Medical Immunology' and teaches immunology to undergraduate and graduate students.
