Lars Frandsen serves as Adjunct Associate Professor and Coordinator of Guitar Studies at the Conservatory of Music within the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. He concurrently holds a full professorship at Nyack College's Manhattan Campus, directing their theory and ear training program. With nearly 20 years of teaching at Brooklyn College, he rebuilt the classical guitar program to full capacity and completely revamped Nyack's curriculum based on Steven Laitz's The Complete Musician, integrating theory with ear training.
His academic background includes:
- Doctoral degree in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music
- Advanced studies at Yale University
- Training at the Royal Academy of Music in London
Frandsen specializes in classical guitar performance with deep expertise in 19th-century guitar literature and historical performance practice, pioneered by his mentor Leif Christensen. His research bridges historical scholarship with contemporary pedagogy through chamber music coaching and innovative integration of music theory with ear training. Influenced by collaborations with Paul O'Dette and Malcolm Bilson, and master classes with John Williams and David Russell, his work emphasizes authentic interpretation of period repertoire.
As founder of the Brooklyn Guitar Quartet with Jesse Miller, he has performed at Avery Fisher Hall, Walt Whitman Theatre, and Dukes Hall in London while recording for CBS Records in India. His five-season residency at Apple Hill Summer School established him as the first guitarist to coach chamber music with members of the New York Philharmonic and major international symphony orchestras.
