About
Lars Folkow is a Professor of Animal Physiology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, leading the Arctic Chronobiology & Physiology (ACP) research group. He specializes in physiological adaptations of Arctic and marine animals, particularly focusing on thermal regulation, hypoxia tolerance in diving mammals, and ecological impacts of environmental changes. His work integrates field studies, laboratory experiments, and advanced molecular techniques to understand survival mechanisms in extreme environments.
Research interests encompass the functional morphology of Arctic fauna (e.g., reindeer, seals, ptarmigans), circadian rhythms, and the physiological basis of seasonal adaptations. Notable studies include investigations into respiratory adaptations in seals, brain hypoxia tolerance in deep-diving species, and the impact of climate change on Arctic ecosystems.
Recent publications highlight innovations in DNA metabarcoding for diet analysis, thermal modeling of nasal turbinates, and ACE2 receptor distribution in wildlife. His research also addresses practical applications, such as pharmacokinetics of veterinary drugs in reindeer and disease ecology of Arctic pathogens.
As a Person with Special Control Responsibility (PMSK) for UiT’s laboratory animal facility #089, Folkow oversees ethical and technical standards in animal research. His contributions bridge fundamental physiology with applied conservation and veterinary challenges in the Arctic.
