Lars E. F. Johannessen is a Professor at the Centre for the Study of Professions at OsloMet – storbyuniversitetet. He is also a Faculty Fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University and leads the Centre for the Study of Digitalization of Public Services and Citizenship (CEDIC) at OsloMet. Johannessen specializes in microsociology, cultural sociology, science and technology studies, and qualitative methods.
His research focuses on digitalization, telepresence technologies, autism, interaction theory, and standardization. Recent projects include analyzing telepresence robots' role in education and healthcare, and theoretical reflections on face-to-face interaction. He has published extensively on these topics in journals like British Journal of Sociology of Education and New Media & Society.
Johannessen holds a 2018 PhD in studies of professions from OsloMet and a 2013 Master in sociology from the University of Oslo. He has received awards including the 2023 Promising Researcher of the Year at OsloMet and the 2019 Best Journal Article Award for his work on medical professional boundaries.
He contributes to academic discourse through co-leading the Qualitative Research Forum at OsloMet and founding the Norwegian Microsociological Network. His teaching includes qualitative methods and theory of professions at the PhD level.
