Lama Elhatow

Lama Elhatow serves as both Program Coordinator and Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, where she teaches in the MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy and MS in Energy Policy and Climate programs. She brings over 15 years of environmental expertise, including 12 years as an environmental and social specialist with the World Bank Group's International Finance Corporation.

Research Focus: Elhatow's research centers on the intersection of climate change and water resources management, with particular emphasis on transboundary water cooperation. Her work explores how climate change can serve as a catalyst for regional cooperation, as demonstrated in her recent study of the Blue Nile River Basin. She specializes in applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to environmental challenges and developing energy policies that address climate adaptation and mitigation.

Her professional portfolio includes leading complex infrastructure projects such as the Benban solar park in Egypt and hydropower development in Pakistan's transboundary watersheds. She has extensive experience ensuring compliance with international environmental and social performance standards across diverse sectors including manufacturing, infrastructure, services, and financial markets.

Professional Experience: Beyond her academic role, Elhatow has served as a climate policy officer for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's Conference of the Parties (2009-2014, 2022), working with governments worldwide on greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies. Her geographic expertise spans the Middle East and North Africa, Pakistan, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America.
