About
Luis Alejandro Toledo Machado is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela, affiliated with the CISPAC (Inter-University Research Centre for Cultural Atlantic Landscapes) and the Department of History. His academic focus is Contemporary History, particularly intentional communities, counterculture, utopias, and environmental history. He completed his PhD at the Autonomous University of Madrid in 2023 with a thesis on countercultural communes in Spain (1968-1986), supported by University Teacher Training Grants (FPU).
His research explores the historical and sociological dimensions of communes as utopian spaces, their spatial conceptions, and their role as alternatives to traditional social structures like the family. Key areas include the back-to-the-land initiatives in Portuguese-speaking regions and the intersection of youth movements with environmental and libertarian ideologies.
Publications highlight analyses of communes as utopian experiments, their spatial configurations, and their legacy in contemporary rural movements. He also investigates pedagogical methods like service-learning through historical Wikipedia contributions, emphasizing community engagement and student impact.
Active in the HISTAGRA research group and UtopiAtlantica projects, his work bridges historical scholarship with cultural and environmental themes, contributing to transatlantic utopian studies and youth studies.
