Kyu Rhee is an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences within Weill Cornell Medicine. His research focuses on the biochemical mechanisms of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), and its interactions with host immunity and antibiotics.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University
- M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine
Rhee's lab employs mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to study Mtb metabolism, systems biology, orphan enzyme discovery, transmission microbiology, and intrabacterial pharmacology. His work addresses TB's global health impact, emphasizing drug resistance and persistence.
Scientific Awards
- Burroughs Welcome Career Award in the Biomedical Sciences
- Harrington Discovery Institute Scholar-Innovator Award
Rhee leads three physician-scientist training programs and co-leads an NIH-funded Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center, as well as the Cornell Center for Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education.
