About
Kyoohyun Kim is a Researcher and Head of the Microscopy Facility at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL). He specializes in developing advanced quantitative microscopy techniques for biomedical applications, including optical diffraction tomography (ODT) and Brillouin microscopy.
- Current Role: Head of Microscopy Facility, MPL (since 2019)
- Past Positions: Postdoctoral Researcher at BIOTEC, TU Dresden (2017–2019); PhD in Physics at KAIST (2011–2017)
Research Focus: Quantitative measurement of physical parameters in biological systems through photonics. His work enables 3D refractive index mapping of cells and tissues to derive mechanical and structural properties.
- Key Techniques: ODT for dry mass/mass density quantification
- Brillouin microscopy for longitudinal modulus analysis
- Holographic optical tweezers for manipulation
Applications: Studying subcellular organelles, whole organisms (nematodes, zebrafish larvae), and advancing physical modeling in biology.
