Kurt Bretsch

Kurt Bretsch is an Advanced Senior Lecturer at Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. He serves as Faculty Director for the immersive 'Semester by the Sea' program and teaches a summer Oceanography course for undergraduates and high school students.

His research focuses on coastal and estuarine marine community ecology, particularly spatial-temporal distributions of marine species and habitat use patterns. He developed the innovative 'sweep flume' sampling method for studying tidal migrations of aquatic organisms in salt marsh environments.

Research trends include: biotic-abiotic interactions in marine ecosystems, habitat stress responses, and applied field methodologies. His work integrates ecological research with undergraduate education initiatives.
