Kukka Ranta is a Junior Researcher and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Social Sciences, supported by the Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation. She focuses on Sámi rights, settler colonialism, and the energy transition’s impact on Indigenous communities. Currently, she serves as a part-time research assistant on the SápmiDem project, examining democratic engagement in the energy transition. Previously, she worked as a Sámi rights advisor at Amnesty International Finland and coordinated the Just Transition in Sápmi project.
Education includes a Master of Social Sciences (Development Studies, University of Helsinki) and a Bachelor of Arts in History (University of Helsinki). She teaches courses on Indigenous studies and qualitative research methods.
Her research addresses Sámi participation in land-use planning, colonial structures in Finland, and the energy transition’s threats to Indigenous livelihoods. Key projects include a commissioned report for the Sámi Truth and Reconciliation Commission and collaborative work with Amnesty International on human rights violations in energy projects.
Recognitions include a Finnish Press Photo Competition Honorable Mention (2023) and a Nessling Foundation PhD Scholarship (2020–2024). She frequently publishes in academic and media outlets, advocating for Indigenous rights and environmental justice.
