Kristine Aquino

Dr. Kristine Aquino is a Senior Lecturer in International Studies at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on migration studies, race and ethnicity, urban diversity, and transnationalism, with a particular emphasis on Filipino diasporic experiences. She has held significant academic leadership roles including Course Director for the Bachelor of Sustainability and Environment (2021–present) and Convener of the FASS Diversities and Social Inclusion Research Group (2022–present). Dr. Aquino's work bridges academia and community engagement, particularly through creative projects like the photo exhibition On Sundays, We Play, which highlights migrant domestic workers' cultural practices.

Her educational background includes a PhD in Sociology from Macquarie University and a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours I). She has authored/co-authored influential books such as Racism and Resistance among the Filipino Diaspora (2018) and The Calamansi Story (2023), and serves on editorial boards for Ethnic and Racial Studies and the Anthem Studies in Asian Mobilities series. Her research has been recognized with awards including a Special Commendation from the Australian Sociological Association and a United Nations Association of Australia award for sustainable cities work.

Dr. Aquino's teaching emphasizes global social justice and community engagement, notably receiving a Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award for her leadership in Work Integrated Learning. She currently leads an Australian Research Council-funded project investigating migrant leisure cultures in global cities and collaborates with international organizations like the UN International Organisation for Migration.
