Kristin Schaefer-Schiumo

Kristin Schaefer-Schiumo is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Development at Long Island University’s College of Education, Information and Technology. She teaches graduate-level applied and theoretical courses in mental health and school counseling programs, and actively contributes to curriculum development in face-to-face and mixed-method formats.

Her research focuses on prolonged and complicated grief, college student perceptions of physical dating violence, and enhancing counselor trainees’ implementation of primary prevention programs. She integrates evidence-based, strengths-focused approaches such as mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, EMDR, and brainspotting in her clinical work with adolescents and adults.
