Kristen Ranse

Associate Professor Kristen Ranse, RN, PhD is a Registered Nurse and academic at Queensland University of Technology's Faculty of Health, School of Nursing. She holds the position of Associate Professor in Palliative Care and is actively engaged in research to improve end-of-life care quality for patients and their families.

Her research program focuses on supporting clinicians to provide skilled compassionate care at the end-of-life, with emphasis on appropriate treatment timing and facilitating patient and family-centered care across diverse settings and transitions. Kristen has extensive research experience in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches, pursuing theory-informed research with innovative methodologies.

Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on end-of-life care in critical settings, with particular attention to communication strategies for vulnerable patients, interprofessional collaboration, and culturally appropriate care models. Her work spans international contexts including Australia and Sri Lanka, addressing challenges in ICU settings, emergency departments, and organ donation processes.

She is actively involved in professional organizations including the End-of-Life Care Advisory Panel of the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (2021 to date) and serves on the Editorial Board of Australian Critical Care (2019 to date). Her research is supported through collaborative partnerships with health services to address current needs and provide contextually relevant solutions.

Kristen is currently accepting research students for Honours, Masters and PhD study and is associated with the Centre for Healthcare Transformation and Cancer and Palliative Care Outcomes Centre at QUT. Her work bridges academic research with practical healthcare applications to improve patient outcomes in palliative and critical care contexts.
