Dr. Krista A. Lewis is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Anthropology at Appalachian State University. Her research focuses on Arabian archaeology, particularly the interplay of food systems, politics, environment, and trade in Yemen and Oman. She directs excavations at Al Baleed in Oman’s UNESCO World Heritage Land of Frankincense, investigating ancient urbanization and trade networks. Dr. Lewis holds a Ph.D. (2005) and M.A. (1997) from the University of Chicago, and a B.S. (1995) from Southwest Missouri State University.
Her work emphasizes archaeological heritage preservation amid climate change and conflict. She co-founded the Arkansas ArchaeOlympics and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Institute for Yemeni Studies and the Middle East Section of the American Anthropological Association. Research interests include public archaeology, ancient urbanism, and long-term human-environment interactions.
