About
Krishnan Raghavachari serves as Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University Bloomington, having joined the faculty in 2002 and receiving promotion to Distinguished Professor in 2014. His internationally recognized research centers on quantum chemistry and electronic structure theory development.
His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University (1981), where he worked under Nobel Laureate John Pople. Prior to Indiana University, he spent over two decades at Bell Laboratories as a research scientist.
Raghavachari pioneered the CCSD(T) method (1989), universally acclaimed as 'the Gold Standard of Quantum Chemistry,' and developed fragmentation-based approaches enabling accurate quantum calculations on large molecules. His current research integrates machine learning with quantum chemistry for computational catalysis, drug design, and fluorescent materials development. This work spans computational thermochemistry, biochemistry applications, and materials science innovation.
His exceptional contributions are recognized through prestigious honors:
- Davisson-Germer Prize in Surface Physics (2009)
- Chemical Research Society of India Medal (2017)
- Bicentennial Medal from Indiana University (2020)
- Election to the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science
- Fellowships in APS, RSC, and AAAS
Professor Raghavachari has served on the American Chemical Society's Physical Chemistry Advisory Board and chaired its Theoretical Chemistry subdivision. He contributes to scholarly discourse through editorial roles at the Journal of Physical Chemistry, Journal of Computational Chemistry, and other leading publications. Leading the Raghavachari Group, his prolific output includes 430+ publications with 75,000+ citations (h-index=97), demonstrating sustained impact across chemistry, physics, and materials science disciplines.
