About
Dr. Kostas Retsikas is a Reader in Social Anthropology at SOAS University of London's Department of Anthropology and Sociology. With a BA from Athens, MA from Kent, and PhD from Edinburgh, he has taught at SOAS since 2004. His research explores personhood in Java, Islamic economics in Indonesia, and the films of Theo Angelopoulos through post-structuralist theoretical frameworks.
Retsikas' fieldwork includes ethnographic studies in Probolinggo (East Java) on personhood and becoming, resulting in his monograph 'Becoming – An Anthropological Approach to Understandings of the Person in Java'. His Surabaya/Jakarta research on Islamic economics examines zakat and micro-finance as temporal synthesis in divine worship.
Recent cinematic research analyzes Angelopoulos' 'other Greece' concept through the communicative artifice of cinematic images. He currently supervises doctoral candidate Flora Hastings on urban ecology in Barcelona.
