About
Koit Reimand is a Lecturer in Immunology at the University of Tartu, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine. He has dedicated over three decades to academic and research work at the University of Tartu, progressing from an intern in 1993 to his current position as Lecturer since 2018. His research spans immunology with a focus on autoantibodies as biomarkers, diabetes-related autoimmunity, and reproductive immunology.
- Medical Doctor (MD) from University of Tartu Medical Faculty (1993)
- PhD in Medicine (2010) with dissertation 'Autoimmunity in reproductive failure: A study on associated autoantibodies and autoantigens' under Raivo Uibo's supervision
Reimand's research primarily focuses on the role of autoantibodies as biomarkers in various conditions, with particular emphasis on diabetes-related autoantibodies. His work investigates the immunological mechanisms in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, including the impact of GADA and anti-ZnT8 autoantibodies on disease progression. Another significant research stream examines the relationship between gonadal autoimmunity and infertility, as reflected in his doctoral dissertation. He has also made notable contributions to understanding immune abnormalities in Down syndrome, particularly regarding autoantibody profiles.
Analysis of Reimand's publication record (2011-2023) reveals a consistent research trajectory centered on autoantibodies in diabetes and immune disorders. His work spans basic immunological research, clinical applications, and diagnostic methodology development. Notable contributions include the development of a luciferase-based system for ZnT8 autoantibody detection and participation in international standardization efforts for autoantibody testing. His research demonstrates a strong translational focus, bridging laboratory findings with clinical applications in diabetes and autoimmune disorders.
As an educator, Reimand has co-authored immunology textbooks for university students and has supervised Master's level research, including Keiu-Anett Hellaste's 2020 thesis on insulin autoantibody detection. He has been actively involved in multiple significant research projects, both as principal investigator (for 'Immunology terms in Estonian' and 'Autoantibody methodology analysis') and as collaborator on larger initiatives led by Raivo Uibo, including the ongoing 'Immune mechanisms in adulthood diabetes' project (2020-2025) with over 1.2 million EUR in funding.
Reimand is an active member of the Estonian Society for Immunology and Allergology and has worked within the Immunology research group at the University of Tartu. His collaborative work extends internationally through participation in standardization programs and conferences. His research environment includes laboratory facilities for autoantibody detection and analysis, with particular expertise in developing and evaluating diagnostic methodologies for diabetes-related autoantibodies.
