Professor Kirk Johnson holds dual appointments in Sociology at Fort Hays State University (Kansas) and the University of Guam, where he has served as a full-time professor for over two decades. Affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences at UOG, he teaches online courses including SOC 310 (Women and Gender Studies), SOC 384 (Social Problems), and SOC 681 (NGOs: Global Social Innovation).
His research spans development and social change, religion, education, human ecology, and sustainability, with fieldwork concentrated across Pacific Island nations (Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, etc.) and Asia (India, Indonesia). Since 2004, he has directed the Bali Field School, a community development project examining tradition-modernity dynamics and indigenous cultural survival through a cross-cultural lens.
Dr. Johnson's scholarly contributions include numerous books and journal articles, alongside over 35 international conference presentations. His work emphasizes grassroots community development and capacity building, documented through initiatives like the 2007 documentary series 'Casting Our Net: Rediscovering Community in the 21st Century'.
