Dr. Kim Oliver is a Professor of Physical Education Teacher Education in the Department of Kinesiology & Dance at New Mexico State University. She directs the Physical Education Teacher Education concentration and holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech.
Her research focuses on developing activist approaches to physical education, particularly exploring how teachers can help adolescent girls overcome barriers to physical activity. She has pioneered an activist approach integrating student-centered pedagogy, inquiry-based learning, and responsiveness to student needs.
Dr. Oliver has received the American Educational Research Association Distinguished Scholar Award (2018) and secured major grants including a $1 million Department of Education grant for the Las Cruces Health and Physical Activity Initiative.
She has published extensively in journals including Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and Teachers College Record, and authored books like 'Girls, Gender and Physical Education: An Activist Approach'. Her research lab collaborates on projects exploring activist approaches in diverse educational settings.
