Kim D. Hester Williams is a Professor in the Department of English at Sonoma State University's College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. Her research examines 19th-century American literature, African American literary traditions, and the intersections of race, gender, and ecology in literature and film. She is an affiliate faculty in American Multicultural Studies, Film Studies, and Women and Gender Studies.
Her work explores racial representation through diverse lenses, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Toni Morrison, and Octavia Butler. She co-edited Racial Ecologies (2018) and is completing a monograph on racial archetypes in American culture. Her publications analyze media figures like Oprah Winfrey and Eminem, alongside horror/sci-fi narratives.
Williams incorporates visual storytelling in courses such as 'Race, Difference, and Science Fiction' and 'Herman Melville and Toni Morrison.' She also writes feminist poetry rooted in African American womanist traditions.
