About
Kim Brøsen is Professor of Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Health Services Research at the University of Southern Denmark. Since 1995 he has led research into pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics, focusing on genetic determinants of drug metabolism and transport.
Education:
- 1988 – Dr.med. in Clinical Pharmacology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Odense University
- 1981 – Cand.med., University of Copenhagen
Research Interests:
Professor Brøsen’s core research area is pharmacokinetics, with particular emphasis on genetic polymorphisms affecting hepatic drug metabolism (e.g., CYP2D6 and CYP2C19) and, more recently, on genetic control of drug transport across cellular membranes. These investigations bridge basic pharmacology and clinical applications, underpinning personalized medicine strategies.
Across more than 380 peer-reviewed publications, his recent work has concentrated on population pharmacokinetic modelling of tacrolimus in kidney transplant patients, the influence of antibiotics on P-glycoprotein-mediated drug transport, and metformin pharmacogenomics. These studies collectively advance understanding of variability in drug response and inform evidence-based dosing algorithms.
Scientific Awards:
- BCPT Nordic Prize in Pharmacology and Toxicology (2022)
- EACPT Lifetime Achievement Award (2022)
PhD Supervision & Mentoring:
Professor Brøsen has formally supervised at least four PhD students to completion and continues to mentor junior researchers within his department’s clinical pharmacology group.
Collaborative Networks & Labs:
His research is embedded in an extensive international collaboration network spanning Europe and North America, reflected in multi-centre pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenetic trials. The department hosts state-of-the-art analytical and modelling facilities supporting translational pharmacology research.
