Kim Brooks Mata serves as Associate Professor and Program/Artistic Director of Dance at the University of Virginia, where she also heads the Dance Program. A Registered Somatic Movement Educator (RSME) and Certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst (CLMA), her academic role integrates somatic principles with performance practice.
Her educational background includes dance training at The Rotterdam Dance Academy (Codarts) in the Netherlands and an MFA in Modern Dance Performance from the University of Utah.
Research focuses on live/digital performance practices, relationality dynamics across human-landscape-performance contexts, and agency in mediated bodily representations. Her somatic approach informs contemporary technique pedagogy, screendance creation, and explorations of intimacy in digital compositions. Creative outputs span international festival screenings across Europe and North America.
Teaching responsibilities encompass all levels of Modern/Contemporary technique, Composition, Screendance production, Somatic Practices and Research, and artistic direction of semesterly dance concerts.
