About
Dr. Kiana Amini is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering within the Faculty of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She leads the Amini Lab, which focuses on developing electrochemical technologies for clean energy applications. Her educational background includes a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology and Master's/PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard University.
Her research spans three interdisciplinary domains:
- Redox Flow Batteries: Designing scalable energy storage systems using electrochemical characterization and in situ diagnostics
- Carbon Dioxide Capture: Developing ambient-condition electrochemical systems for industrial decarbonization
- Lithium Extraction: Creating efficient electrochemical methods for lithium recovery from seawater/brine
Dr. Amini supervises 6 graduate students working on projects ranging from lithium extraction (Omer Shinnawy, Vrisha Vyas) to flow battery optimization (Ehsan Heidari, Daniel Han, Jayson Garcia) and lifecycle analysis (Vivian Chen). She actively recruits PhD candidates and encourages collaborations through initiatives like the Public Scholars Initiative.
