About
Kevin Nguyen is Assistant Professor of STEM Education in the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State University. As a learning scientist and discipline-based education researcher, his ethnographic work examines how communities access and engage with science outside formal institutions, particularly through citizen science initiatives and outdoor education.
Nguyen's research explores: 1) Informal Science Learning in community settings; 2) Equity in STEM through critical approaches; and 3) Active Learning Implementation strategies in higher education. His water quality research in Texas combines ethnography with science and technology studies frameworks.
Analysis of Nguyen's publications reveals methodological innovation in studying learning across contexts. His 2021 Journal of the Learning Sciences article demonstrates how ethnographic methods capture community knowledge practices in whitewater canoeing, while systematic reviews establish evidence-based frameworks for active learning adoption in STEM classrooms.
